1. Eat healthy. Opt for organic whenever possible and avoid the most contaminated conventionally grown produce: peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrots, and pears. Children can learn to love fruits and vegetables early but make sure they’re safe choices.

2. Drink plenty of pure water. Plastic bottled water is totally passé. It’s over-priced, over packaged, and not necessarily cleaner than tap. Invest in a water filter and reusable stainless steel water bottles for when you’re out and about with thirsty kids.

3. Take care without chemicals. Personal care products like bubble bath and lotions are filled with questionable chemicals. Eliminate or reduce as many products as you can — especially those with strong fragrances or perfume. You can also reduce your exposure by using natural ingredients: either purchase organic body care products or make your own (plain olive oil makes a great skin moisturizer). Babies skin is particularly sensitve so choose wisely.

4. Keep your nest the greenest clean. Look for natural cleaners (read labels to make sure) or save a few bucks by making your own. Baking soda is great for scouring. Vinegar diluted with water cleans windows and countertops (killing bacteria and odors, as well). These small and inexpensive changes will keep your kids safer at home.

5. Breathe clean air. In the winter children are in the house more so make sure your air is fresh. According to the US EPA, indoor air is typically 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. In addition, to using safer products, open your windows for a few minutes every day to let in some fresh air. Vacuum regularly with a HEPA filtered vacuum. Growing plants can also help clean your air.

6. Take playtime back to the basics. Simplicity is better for your child’s imagination, intellect, and health — and, yes, much better for the planet. Stick to toys made from natural materials like solid wood and organic textiles. Use items you already own as play things — cookware drums, sock puppets, and homemade play dough.

7. Ban bugs and whack weeds using common sense instead of chemicals. Find safer alternatives like keeping your house clean to prevent indoor bug and rodent problems. Too late for prevention? Visit BeyondPesticides.org for safer methods to address almost any pest issue. Floors and lawns are natural habitats for kids so make sure they’re chemical free.

8. Buy less stuff. If you buy less stuff you are reducing your exposure to chemicals that off-gas from most new products. Consider buying the things you need from second hand sources. Give something old a new look with organic textiles or no-VOC paint. Just be sure that you don’t buy things that may have lead paint or may be molding (give it a good whiff). Also, for children’s items, look into the latest safety standards and recalls at CPSC.gov.

9. Don’t eat your dust. Take off your shoes before entering your home. Dust and wet mop regularly. And, wash hands regularly (no need for antibacterials, soap and water work just fine). Think about all the time that toddlers and infants spend on your floors.

10. Be happy. Emotional health is just as important as physical health, so remember to laugh and smile – a lot. Don’t get neurotic because it will only weaken your system and make it less capable of fighting off the toxic assault of modern living. Do your best and at the end of the day (or anytime you feel like it) to cuddle, play, tickle, laugh, love, and breathe with your kids. They’ll be healthier and happier if you are too.

Tennessee Moom Sends Adopted Son Back To Russia

(CBS) The president of Russia is calling it a "monstrous deed" - the decision by a Tennessee woman to send her adopted son back to his homeland, alone.

Now authorities in Shelbyville are investigating the actions of Torry and Nancy Hansen, the adoptive mother and grandmother of 7-year-old Artyom Savelyev.

On CBS' "The Early Show" this morning, Bedford County Sheriff Randall Boyce said his department is checking into what (if any) crime was committed.

"We'll have to go through this with kind of a fine tooth comb and see exactly what has been done here. Was this a poor judgment on her part, or has something illegal been done?"

Boyce also said it was not known if the adoption had been finalized, as court records on adoptions are sealed. "We'll have to get a court order to get in to see if the adoption was final," he told Rodriguez.

Also being investigated is the manner of Artyem's travel from the U.S.: "Was it illegal to put a child on an airplane and send him halfway around the world?" said Boyce. "We're told that in the United States, a child eight years old can be put on an airplane and sent wherever, and that's okay, but seven years old is not."

Boyce said what his investigators have been hearing so far indicates continued problems in the Hansen home: "What we're getting mostly is that he had violent issues and that they were more or less afraid of him, as far as trying to burn the house while they were asleep. I think he threatened some of these things. But it's still early. We're not exactly sure what the whole deal is."

"It Got to Be Where You Feared for Your Safety"

Nancy Hansen told The Associated Press that the motives of her daughter - a 33-year-old, unmarried nurse - were sincere.

"The intent of my daughter was to have a family and the intent of my whole family was to love that child," she said Friday.

The family was told the boy, whose Russian name is Artyom Savelyev, was healthy in September when he was brought from the town of Partizansk in Russia's Far East to his new home in the heart of Tennessee horse country. The skinny boy seemed happy, but the behavioral problems began soon after, Hansen said.

"The Russian orphanage officials completely lied to her because they wanted to get rid of him," she said.

Hansen chronicled a list of problems: hitting, screaming and spitting at his mother and threatening to kill family members. Hansen said his eruptions were often sparked when he was denied something he wanted, like toys or video games.

"He drew a picture of our house burning down and he'll tell anybody that he's going to burn our house down with us in it," she said. "It got to be where you feared for your safety. It was terrible."

Hansen said she thought that with their love, they could help him. "I was wrong," she said.

She said her daughter sought advice from psychologists but never had her adoptive son meet with one. They chose an English-language home study program, hoping to enroll him in traditional school in the fall. He would play with his cousin, Logan, at the family's property in Shelbyville, where there is a large backyard and a swingset.

In February, Hansen said, the family could take no more. The boy flew into a rage, snatched a 3-pound statue and tried to attack his aunt with it. Hansen said he was apparently upset after his aunt asked him to correct math problems on his school work.

Hansen bought the plane ticket, and the family arranged to pay a man in Russia $200 to take him from the airport and drop him off at the Russian education ministry. He arrived alone Thursday on a United Airlines flight from Washington.

When Artem arrived in Moscow, he was carrying a note that read in part:

"I am sorry to say that for the safety of my family, friends, and myself, … I no longer wish to parent this child. As he is a Russian national, I am returning him to your guardianship."

It went on to say that "he is violent and has severe psychopathic issues."

Sheriff Boyce said reaction to the news in his community and from around the country has been mixed.

"We've had phone calls from everywhere," he told "Early Show" anchor Maggie Rodriguez, "some people saying, you know, they had been involved in an incident like this and they didn't blame her for what they done, that they had been lied to by the adoption agency. Some said, you know, that we hope we prosecute her to the fullest of the law because they're losing their adoption rights to their child.

"It's a sad situation, and I guess there's not going to be a real good end to it one way or the other."

Also on "The Early Show," international adoption expert Joyce Sterkel of the Ranch For Kids Project, which helps "at risk" adopted kids, predominantly from Russia, said that she was not surprised that some parents are sympathetic to Torry Hansen's situation.

"I would say overwhelmingly, anyone who has parented a post-institutionalized child with difficulties is very sympathetic with this mother, even though they may not agree with the manner by which she handled it," Sterkel said.

Sterkel said while many expect "love heals," that a child's genetic foundation, including inter-uterine exposure to alcohol during a mother's pregnancy, cannot be loved away.

"It's a problem everywhere [that] pregnant women drink, and certainly in Russia that's the case. That can cause permanent organic brain damage."

Tennessee adoption agencies say Hansen had other options.

Debbie Robinson, executive director of Miriam's Promise adoption agency in Nashville, told CBS News, "This child could've been placed with a qualified, licensed agency for placement services so that . . . somebody like us, or Catholic charities, could've found a family."

Sterkel said that adoptive parents who find themselves in a situation with a violent child often have few options.

"Saying the woman can go back to the adoption agency and turn the child over to them - no adoption agency will take a 7-year-old child with these problems," Sterkel said. "Social services probably will not help you. They will not take the child into foster care. You have the child, and once you've totally exhausted all your financial resources, then perhaps you can get some help. But as long as you have any financial resources, you won't get any help, you'll have to pay for it.

"I've seen parents spend tens of thousands of dollars on psychiatric facilities, elaborate treatments, medications, and all of it failed," she said.

Adoptions Suspended

CBS News correspondent Whit Johnson reports that Torry Hansen's decision to send her adopted son packing has sparked international outrage.

Russian authorities have temporarily suspended adoptions by American families after the Tennessee mom sent the 7-year-old on a one-way flight back to his homeland alone.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called the boy's return "the last straw" after a string of foreign adoption failures, and officials in Moscow have called for a suspension of all U.S. adoptions in Russia - which totaled about 1,600 last year, according to the non-profit U.S. advocacy group the National Council For Adoption.

The Russian education ministry immediately suspended the license of the group involved in the adoption - the World Association for Children and Parents, a Renton, Washington-based agency - for the duration of an investigation.

"If Russia chooses to suspend these adoptions, these are Russian citizens - that is Russia's right," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. "We would like to see these adoptions continue, but we understand the concern that Russia has, [and] we share that concern."

Summertime Lemonade Cocktail

Spring is here and after the horrible snow storm in February, I am ready for the warm weather and summertime coctails. Forget Country Time Lemonade have one of these cocktails to unwind after a stressful day!
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 part lemon liqueur (we use Caravella Limoncello originale d’Italia, imported from Italy) - 2 parts vodka (we like Absolut Citron) - 4 parts lemonade - 1 part fresh lemon juice (or ½ part lemon & ½ part lime juice) - Sugar (for rim)

Directions
Dip martini glass rim into lemon juice. Then dip rim into sugar. Set aside. Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake with ice. Strain and pour into a martini glass. Garnish with lemon and lime wedges or fresh mint leaves. Enjoy.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada have recalled Gund Baby Paperboard Books. 15,100 books have been recalled in the United States and 865 have been recalled in Canada.

The styrofoam used to fill the book binding can detach. This poses a choking/aspiration hazard to infants and young children. There have been no injuries reported.

Replace the foot and return to the starting position, then raise the left knee and twist to bring the right elbow toward the left knee. Repeat 10-20 times. Move 3: Standing Toe Touches
Start in a standing position with your feet hip-width apart, bellybutton pulled in to your spine and your pelvis slight tucked under you. Raise both arms straight above your head. Bend foreword at your waist letting your chest and arms come forward, as you bend raise your right leg straight up in front of you. Return your leg to the ground and bring your arms back up in the air. Repeat lifting the left leg. Alternate 10-20 times.

Move 4: The Plank
To do a plank start on your hands and knees. Put your forearms on the ground directly below your shoulders, raise up onto your toes so that your body is in a long flat line. Be sure to draw your bellybutton into your spine and squeeze your booty at the same time. Hold the position for 10-60 seconds. If you have any discomfort in your lower back you can do this with your knees on the ground. See the link at the end of this article for a link to Brooke and Autumn's demo.

Move 5: Sitting abdominal Crunch
To do a sitting abdominal crunch, sit on a comfortable, soft service, start with both knees bent and your feet flat on the ground. Place your hands directly behind you with your fingertips facing your booty. Extend your right leg out straight, and draw in your abdominal muscles. Crunch forward and bend your right knee bringing it into your chest. Then lean back slightly and extend the right leg back out in front of you. Again, crunch forward and pull the knee in, then return to the starting position. Repeat 10-20 times with each leg.

10 Great Ideas to bond with your BFF's!

1. Game Night
Some girls we know do a regular poker night once a week -- they never miss it. They end up spending HOURS playing cards, laughing, drinking wine and catching up. All the ladies bring something to eat and drink and they rotate hosting responsibilities.

2. Wine-Tasting
We told you about how fun it was to join a wine club a few days ago (missed the article? Here it is -- below) but some of us just can't easily leave our house, right? You could do your own wine-tasting party where several people are delegated to bring a new wine and do little tastings. There are lots of good, inexpensive wines to taste -- buy a Wine Spectator and check it out.

3. Spa Night
This can be super fun and way cheaper than going to an actual spa. Testing out masks and the latest OPI nail colors are such a fun get - together and super girly. Everyone can bring something different - a peel, a clay mask, a hair conditioner, salt scrubs, nail colors. You can even make a "spa water" with cucumber, mint and oranges. Then again, you could also make cocktails. :)

4. Potluck
It's an old classic that never really gets old. What's better than sitting around a kitchen and eating with the girls? Nothing.

5. Trading clothes
Lately, this has become a pretty popular thing to do. Lots of women don't want to spend money on clothes right now so what they're doing is bringing the clothes they are bored of and trading it for something someone else doesn't want anymore. That way, you feel like you have some new items in your closet without spending any money!

6. Mani Pedis
It's kind of like the spa-night, but not really. Hire someone to give everyone a mani-pedi and kill two birds with one stone: Have your girls get together and also get your nails done by a professional. If everyone chips in, it's no more expensive than actually going to the nail salon for one.

7. Book club
It may sound boring, but this can actually be awesome. Our kids aren't the only ones who need to be educated and inspired -- we do too! Picking some great books can really get a good discussion going. Creativity starts to flow, ideas are born and it's just an all around excellent thing to do for yourself. Plus, it will also force you to read on a regular basis (something we set aside a lot as moms).

8. Movie Night
How many times have you seen the "Sex and the City" movie with your girlfriends? Pick a movie, make some popcorn, grab some wine and turn down the lights. You don't need to go to the movies and spend a lot of money -- it's more fun in your own living room because you get to chat during the movie!

9. Cook
Get a fantastic recipe, put every person in charge of something and cook up a great meal together. It's best to open a few bottles of wine during the cooking, that can be really fun. It forces you to not just eat dinner and go, but to actually cook it together then sit down and enjoy it.

10. Exercise
Do an early evening walk or run as a group, take a yoga or exercise class all together -- then, if your gym has it, take a steam or sauna. You'll be home in time for dinner with your own family, yet you still get some good girl time.

Taking Time For Yourself

Being a great parent means taking care of yourself and modeling that self care for your family. Many of my blogs so far have been about what we can do for our kids. And following this advice means being strong and ready to take on the challenge. As Moms we are used to those challenges, doing everything for others, multitasking, being on the move, driving to dance classes, making lunches, breaking up arguments, helping with homework and on and on. Many mothers feel guilty when they do things for themselves and, as a result, get depleted.

Finding time to rest, eat well, and spend time doing things we like may sound like things you don’t have energy for, but they are critical to good parenting. We can’t be the parent we want to be if we are at our wits end most of the time. Here are some practical tips to help you take care of yourself. Remember: giving to yourself is a gift to your family.

1. Go on a virtual vacation
Close the door and sit at the computer, choose some great music for the background, go to the place where you keep your pictures on the computer and hit slide show mode. You can run pictures of vacations you’ve been on and get swept away. Or look at photos of a happy family gathering and see those smiling faces. This is what you do it all for.

2. Get together with friends
Choose a night once or twice a month to get together with good friends and stick to it. And don’t spend all night talking about the kids!

3. Walk
Go for a walk alone in nature if possible.

4. Express your creativity
A few hours doing something creative apart from your family can do a lot to recharge your batteries.

5. Take a bath with candles, music or a great book
I know this sounds corny and cliché, but it really is soothing and comforting. Bring a book or listen to a great book on your iPod to take yourself away and relax. Choose a bath night and tell your whole family you are sticking to it and to respect that time.

6. Get a Mother’s Helper
See if there’s a younger teen or tween in your neighborhood who can help you once a week. If they’re too young to babysit, they can help by playing with younger kids so you can get other things done, or rest. Little ones are fascinated by bigger kids and the tween or young teen will love the responsibility.

7. Delegate
It won’t always be done just the way you like it, but it is important to spread responsibilities around. It’s good for the kids and it’s good for you. Get your kids to help out.

8. Laugh
Take time to laugh and be silly. Rent a great DVD of a standup comedian, watch a funny movie and laugh–it’s so healing and so fun.

Diaper Bag Checklist

If you are a new mom or preparing for your second child, packing your diaper bag with the necessities can be a challenge. What should you pack and How many? Here are somethings that every mom or dad should have in their diaper bag when out with baby.

Diapers at least 8 if you have a newborn you will need aproximately 1 diaper for every hour you are out. As your child gets older you will not have to change her quite as often,but diapers are something you never want to run out of.

A Wipecase filled with wipes, not only are these needed for changing your baby, but for your hands and any other accidents that may occur while you are out. Instead of a plain white one, do diaper duty in style and get one that matches your diaper bag.

A Changing Mat (most diaper bags come with them) this is a must have item, place it o the changing station in any public restroom or lay it down before you change your baby when visiting friends and family.

A tube of Diaper Rash Cream, I prefer Balmex in my experience it clears up diaper rash the quickest!

2 Burp Cloths for burping, wiping up faces, cleaning spit up and any other messes.

1 Receiving Blanket in case it gets cold or to place over your stroller to block the sun from your baby.

An extra Outfit which can include sweater, onesie, pair of pants, shirt, socks and sun hat.

Baby Sunscreen

A Baby Bottle if he uses one, pumped milk must be used within 10 hours of taken out of the fridge. If Formula is used fill the bottle with dry formula or you can purchase a container for formula.

2 Toys rattles, discovery toys, and stuffed animal that plays music are all good choices. Switch the toys up from time to time so baby does not get bored.

2 Bibs

A Favorite Comfort object like a lovey blanket.

2 Extra Pacifiers stored in a plastic bag.

3-4 Large Zip Loc Bags for sealing and tossing dirty diapers or for taken home dirty or wet clothes.

A Business Card or Index Card with your name and phone number in case your bag gets lost.

Getting Your Child To Bed Is As Easy as 123!

My Daughter Addy is 2 and sometimes getting her to sleep is hard especially for a working mom!

Getting enough sleep is essential to helping your child lead a healthy life. Addy and I follow the 123's of sleep and she gets her proper rest at night and still manages an hour nap in the middle of the afternoon!

1) Have a Bedtime Routine
Addy brushes her teeth with her Dora toothbrush and the we get in bed with a few of her favorite stuffed animals and her ultra soft green minky swirl and faux zebra fur blanket. Last we read a classic Curious George Book and off to bed we go.

2) Adjust Your Daytime Schedule
If Addy doesn't have her nap by 3:00 then we have to skip it or else she will never go to bed at a decent hour. If your schedule needs you to be up early gradually have your child go to bed a few minutes earlier. If your schedule is like mine and you need to work later in the evening then wake your child up a little later each morning and put her to bed a little later at night. Every family is different find a schedule that allows you to spend the most time with your child and allows your little one to get the 11-14 hours of sleep that needed.

3)Avoid Getting Into Bad Habits
Sometimes it is easy to keep Addy up when I need to finish the dishes or work on my website. Stay consistent with putting your child to sleep at the same time everynight and you both will be well rested and pleasent the next morning :)
